Get all the kids together on the same weekend

Oct 10, 2026 · 3 min read

Ask any blended family what they want more of, and you'll hear the same thing: weekends when all the kids are home at once. Brothers and sisters, stepbrothers and stepsisters, under one roof. When two custody orders don't match, those weekends can be rare.

Why full house weekends are rare

Picture two common schedules side by side:

  • Your kids are with you on the 1st, 3rd and 5th weekends of the month.
  • Your spouse's kids are with you every other weekend, counting from a set date.

Some months these line up twice. Some months they never line up at all. Without a calendar that shows both, you only notice after the fact.

Find them on one calendar

The first step is seeing them. In KidNights, every kid in your home has their own line on the calendar. Full house weekends are easy to spot, because every line is there.

For a faster answer, open Plan a trip, choose With the kids, and tap Find dates. KidNights checks all the kids and lists the weekends when every one of them is with you.

The Find dates screen in KidNights with open weekends listed Find dates lists the weekends when every kid is home.

Protect those weekends

Once you know them, treat full house weekends like gold:

  • Plan the big things there. Family photos, birthday parties, trips, holiday celebrations.
  • Say no to extras. Work trips and adult plans can usually move to another weekend.
  • Tell the grandparents. They'll want to see everyone together too.

Make more of them, when everyone agrees

If full house weekends almost never happen, you might be able to change that, with agreement from the other homes. Courts set the schedule, but many orders let parents agree to changes.

Some ideas families use:

  • Trade one weekend a month so one set of kids lines up with the other.
  • Swap a holiday so the kids are together for the big day.
  • Line up summer weeks so all the kids are home at the same time.

When a change is agreed, add it in KidNights with Change schedule. Pick the kid, choose Trade weekends or Extra time, and save. Your normal schedule stays the same underneath, and you can undo it.

Any lasting change to a court order should go through your lawyer or the court. A trade here and there doesn't need to.

When it just won't line up

Some years, it won't. That's OK. Kids can still build strong bonds on split weekends:

  • Plan a video game night or a call between homes on the weekends they're apart.
  • Keep shared traditions going, like a family group photo on every full house weekend.
  • Put the next full house weekend on the fridge so everyone can count down.

Key takeaways

  • Full house weekends are rare when two orders don't match, and that's normal.
  • Find dates lists weekends when every kid is home.
  • Plan the big family moments on those weekends and protect them.
  • A trade or a holiday swap, when everyone agrees, can create more of them.

Questions families ask

Can KidNights change our custody order?

No. KidNights shows your schedule and any changes you agree to. Lasting changes to an order go through the court.

How do I add a weekend we traded?

Open Change schedule, pick the kid, choose Trade weekends, tap the weekends and save. You can undo it later.

What if one kid is a teenager with their own plans?

Teens often want a say. Show them the full house weekends early and let them help plan one.
